Hungary denies vetoing joint EU statement on Venezuelan elections

Hungarian Foreign Ministry spokesman Máté Paczolay denied that his government had vetoed a joint statement on behalf of all European Union member states on the election results in Venezuela, Babel reports.

Máté Paczolay said this in a commentary to the Hungarian edition of Telex.

The fact that Hungary vetoed the joint statement is fake, – he wrote.

According to the spokesman, Budapest first waited for the report from Venezuela, studied it, and only then joined the statement on behalf of all EU countries.

On the morning of July 31, Politico reported, citing sources, that the EU was unable to issue a joint statement because it was vetoed by Hungary. In the statement, the bloc expressed concern about alleged “shortcomings and irregularities” during the voting in Venezuela.

On July 29, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell issued a statement on his own behalf regarding the elections in Venezuela, saying that reports from domestic and international observers showed numerous violations. The next day, he issued another statement on his own behalf.
