The question of Ukraine’s age has no clear answer, because it depends on where we start counting the history of Ukrainian statehood.
Here are some key dates that can be considered milestones in the history of Ukraine:
IX century: The founding of Kyivan Rus, which is considered to be the ancient Ukrainian state. This year can be considered a point of reference for those who trace the history of Ukraine back to the times of Kievan Rus. The name Kievan Rus is a well-established one in historiography; in the same sources, it was known as Rus’ Land, or Rus’.
1917: Proclamation of the Ukrainian People’s Republic (UPR), the first modern Ukrainian state. This year can be considered the starting point for those who trace the history of Ukraine from the time of the UPR. In 1917-1921, the UPR controlled the territories of central, eastern, and southern Ukraine.
1991: On August 24, Ukraine proclaimed its independence from the Soviet Union. This year is the official date of the founding of modern Ukraine. From now on, only the Constitution and laws of Ukraine are in force on the territory of Ukraine.
So, how old is Ukraine?
- If we count from the times of Kievan Rus, Ukraine is over 1100 years old.
- If we count from the time of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, Ukraine is just over 100 years old.
- If we count from the time of the declaration of independence, Ukraine is 33 years old.
It is important to remember that the Ukrainian state and nation have a much deeper history that goes back to ancient times.
The main thing is to remember the rich and complex history of our country, its achievements and tragedies, and its desire for freedom and independence.
