EU extends sanctions against Russia for another six months

22.07.2024

On Monday, July 22, the European Union extended sanctions against Russia for its aggression against Ukraine for another six months – until the end of January 2025, Babel reports.

This is stated on the website of the EU Council.

The Council today extended the EU’s restrictive measures in response to the Russian Federation’s ongoing actions destabilizing the situation in Ukraine for another 6 months, until January 31, 2025. These sanctions, first introduced in 2014, have been significantly extended since February 2022 in response to Russia’s unprovoked, unjustified and illegal military aggression against Ukraine, – the statement said.

The sanctions currently include restrictions on trade, finance, technology and dual-use goods, industry, transportation and luxury goods.

They also include: a ban on the import or transfer by sea of crude oil and certain petroleum products from Russia to the EU, disconnection of several Russian banks from SWIFT and suspension of broadcasting by propaganda media.

As long as the unlawful actions of the Russian Federation continue to violate the prohibition on the use of force, in serious breach of its obligations under international law, it is appropriate to maintain all measures taken by the EU and to take additional measures if necessary, – the EU Council emphasized.

On July 31, 2014, the Council of the EU adopted Decision 2014/512/CFSP on restrictive measures in response to Russia’s actions destabilizing the situation in Ukraine.
