Since August 8, Estonia has introduced enhanced customs control on the border with Russia at all checkpoints – in Narva, Luhamaa and Koidula, Babel reports.
This is reported by ERR.
As the Estonian government emphasized, this was done to prevent sanctioned goods from entering Russia.
Most often, third countries are indicated as the destination in the declaration. Practice shows that on the way to the destination – which is mostly located in Asia – these goods stop halfway, somewhere in the Russian territory. Among these goods are many suspicious items, such as military or mixed-use items and cash, – said Estonian Finance Minister Jürgen Ligi.
According to him, the enhanced control means that everyone will be inspected when traveling to Russia. Passengers will be questioned if there are any suspicions or their personal belongings will be randomly inspected. Transport will be controlled in the same way.
As for the goods, first of all, they will check the documents. If necessary, they will use an X-ray. In some cases, the goods may be unloaded to check them, – said Ligi.
Earlier, Estonian customs officials said that most often people try to smuggle euros in cash, expensive branded items, luxury wines, and car parts from the European Union to Russia.
