Encroachment on the EU’s Subjectivity

07.12.2025

The European Union fined social network X, owned by Elon Musk, €120 million for violating content moderation law. This is the first fine imposed by the authorities under the Digital Services Act (DSA).

The European Commission stated that the paid blue checkmark system on X misled users. Moreover, the platform prevented analysts from accessing data and failed to properly organize the advertising repository.

For Elon Musk, this amount means little, but the reaction is very emotional. Musk demanded to dissolve the EU and claimed that individual countries must regain sovereignty to represent their people better. He even compared the EU to Nazis:

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland Radosław Sikorski has publicly responded to such accusations in the satiric way:

Censorship in the U.S.

The U.S. secretary Marco Rubio reacted to the fine as well. He called the European Commission’s decision an “attack” on Musk’s social network and on companies from the United States. Rubio also said that the days of censoring U.S. citizens on the internet are gone.

In reality, censorship in the country kept growing in 2025.

At the beginning of the year, Elon Musk announced a new X algorithm that will push more informational and entertaining content.

At the end of November 2025, the White House launched a section on its website where officials publicly record “violators of media integrity.” The administration accuses selected publications of distortion and biased coverage. The online registry includes a “Hall of Shame” and open criticism of specific outlets. This creates discrimination against any alternative views.

Threats Addressing the EU

The United States has begun to establish dialogue with Russia instead of its democratic partners. This makes the very concept of the EU fragile.

This is not Musk’s first attempt to influence EU unity. In 2025, he supported the German far-right party AfD (Alternative for Germany) and called it a model of political realism.

Hungarian PM has also amplified his anti-European position this year, feeling the U.S. support. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán warned that Hungary faces war if the future government “follows Brussels.”

Conclusion

The EU faces high political pressure. Instead of confronting Russia, which continues to live in the totalitarian mindset as it was during World War II, European institutions receive comparisons with Nazis.

EU regulations on disinformation and counter-propaganda remain essential. Viral false narratives, bots that create a misleading impression of public opinion, and anonymity demand real legal action. The EU needs unity and stronger decisions of this kind to block such manifestations of Euroscepticism.
