The administration of US President Joe Biden is planning to urgently send the last remaining $6 billion in security assistance to Ukraine before Donald Trump’s inauguration, Babel reports.
According to Politico, citing sources, this plan is the only option for the US White House to continue sending military weapons and equipment to Ukraine. However, there are problems: after the announcement of a new aid package, its contents reach Ukraine within a few months.
Therefore, whatever the US sends in the coming weeks will likely not reach Ukraine in full by the time Trump takes office and is able to stop unfinished deliveries.
Another obstacle is that the United States can only transfer ammunition, weapons, and equipment that it already has. Although the allocated money will reimburse the Pentagon for everything, it depends on how quickly new shells and weapons can be manufactured or replaced.
The money remaining from the April aid package to Ukraine has already been divided: there is $4.3 billion to cover the transfer of Pentagon stockpiles to Kyiv, and $2.1 billion to order weapons under contract with US defense companies.
