Tonga has become the ninth signatory state to the joint communiqué following the Global Peace Summit.

This was announced by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Hromadske reports.

We see that the principles set out in this historic document are shared by countries around the world. We appreciate Tonga’s commitment to these principles, the head of the Ukrainian state emphasized.

Zelenskyy said that achieving a just and lasting peace in Ukraine and restoring respect for international law “are in the interests of all countries,” including the island states of Oceania.

About Tonga

Tonga is an archipelago state in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, consisting of more than 172 islands, of which only 36 are inhabited. It belongs to the dwarf states, with a total area of about 748 km².

Throughout the nineteenth century, the Kingdom remained the only independent state in Oceania, but then the country was under the British protectorate. The islands of Tonga became independent again in 1970.

There are no diplomatic relations between Tonga and Ukraine.

Global Peace Summit

Following the summit, a declaration with three main points was signed in Switzerland:

  • Global food security. Access to seaports on the Black and Azov Seas must be ensured.
  • All prisoners of war and illegally detained civilians must be released, and deported children must be returned.
