According to a new The Economist/YouGov poll, 49% of Americans said they “somewhat disapprove” or “strongly disapprove” of the way Trump is handling the situation with Russia and Ukraine. At the same time, 30% of respondents expressed partial or full support for his actions, while 20% were unsure.
The survey was conducted from December 26 to 29, 2025, among 1,550 people, with a margin of error of 3.6 percentage points.

Negotiations with Zelenskyy and territorial issues

In the first year of his second term, Trump has attempted to stop the war in Ukraine, but with limited success. Recently, he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at Mar-a-Lago.

At a joint press conference, Trump stated that the parties had made “significant progress” in negotiations over a 20-point peace proposal supported by Zelenskyy. At the same time, the U.S. president noted that one of the most challenging issues is territories, some of which remain under Russian control and could be subject to an agreement in the coming months.
The poll also showed differing American views on the course of the war: 27% believed Russia had the advantage, only 6% thought the advantage was on Ukraine’s side, 44% said neither side was dominant, and 24% were undecided.

Conclusion

The survey shows that President Trump’s actions regarding the war between Russia and Ukraine are divisive among Americans: almost half do not support his approach, while a significant portion expresses support or remains unsure.
Despite the meeting with Zelenskyy and the claimed progress in negotiations, issues regarding territories and the overall dynamics of the conflict remain complex and contentious. This indicates that public opinion in the U.S. regarding Trump’s role in resolving the war is mixed and continues to evolve.
