President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the “ceasefire” announced by Russia has effectively failed to take hold. Russian forces continued shelling, assault operations, and drone attacks along the entire front line.

Details

According to the president, as of the morning of May 8, Russian forces had carried out more than 140 attacks on Ukrainian positions. They also launched 10 assaults, with the heaviest fighting reported near Sloviansk.

Russian troops also used more than 850 drones of various types, including FPV drones, Lancets, and reconnaissance UAVs. Authorities also recorded strikes by attack drones on frontline communities.

Zelenskyy said Russia’s actions show there is not even an “imitation of silence” from Moscow.

“As after the previous day, Ukraine will respond symmetrically today as well. We will defend our positions and people’s lives. Russia must end its war, and everyone will truly notice it when movement toward peace begins. Glory to Ukraine!”

Context

A day earlier, Russia’s Defence Ministry announced a so-called “ceasefire” from May 8 to May 10 in connection with the military parade in Moscow. At the same time, Russian officials threatened strikes on central Kyiv if the events were disrupted.

Ukraine had previously introduced its own “silence regime,” which was supposed to begin overnight on May 6. However, Russia immediately violated it by continuing combat operations and shelling.

Earlier, The Ukrainian Review reported that Russia systematically recruits teenagers in occupied Ukrainian territories into propaganda activities through the “Yunkor” program under Yunarmiya.
