Western societies expect a nuclear war within the next five years

Western societies increasingly believe the world is heading toward a Third World War. At least one-third of Americans, Britons, French, and Canadians expect the use of nuclear weapons within the next five years.

These are the results of a recent POLITICO survey among citizens of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany. The study surveyed over 10,000 adults, with at least 2,000 respondents in each country.

Details

The survey showed that while the public supports increasing defense spending, willingness to make political and financial compromises is declining.

In many countries, Western citizens reject higher taxes, cuts to other government programs, or increased debt. They do so even if these measures would strengthen defense capabilities.

Additionally, the idea of creating a permanent European army under centralized command faces significant skepticism among the public.

Voters are also increasingly aware of the fragility of alliances: many believe the United States could redeploy its main forces to other parts of the world, such as the Indo-Pacific region. This would leave Europe more vulnerable to potential Russian aggression and increases the perceived need for self-defense among European citizens.

Context

The survey was conducted by Public First from February 6 to 9, 2026. The results highlight a challenge for NATO leaders: on one hand, public anxiety over the threat of global conflict is rising, but on the other, there is little readiness to support real financial or political measures to enhance security.

As POLITICO notes, this dynamic shapes political debates ahead of the annual Munich Security Conference, where world leaders will discuss how to ensure stability and security amid growing risks.

Previously, The Ukrainian Review reported that the United States does not plan to leave NATO. However, it expects European allies to take the lead in securing the continent.
