The Armed Forces of Ukraine already control more than 1,250 km² of the territory of the Kursk region of the Russian Federation, Babel writes.
This was stated by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Ukrainian troops already control 92 settlements in the Kursk region.
In general, this operation has become our largest investment in the process of liberating Ukrainians from Russian captivity. We have already captured the largest number of Russian prisoners in one operation, and this is a significant result, and this is one of our goals, and our actions continue, – Zelenskyy emphasized.
The President noted that Ukraine cannot now publicly talk about which units are involved in the Kursk operation.
He added that the Russian border opposite Sumy region is now “largely cleared of the presence of the Russian army”.
And this is also among the goals of our operation, tactical goals, – Zelenskyy said.
Kursk operation
The offensive of the Defense Forces in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation became known on August 6.
Until August 12, Ukraine did not officially confirm the operation in the region, until the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, stated that Ukraine controls almost 1,000 km² of the Kursk region of Russia.
The exact number of Russians captured is currently unknown, but Ukrainian officials (including Syrskyi) have stated that hundreds of Russian soldiers surrendered on some days of the operation.
For self-defense, the Ukrainian military formed a buffer zone in the Kursk region. Ukraine plans to open humanitarian corridors for the evacuation of civilians, allow representatives of the UN and the Red Cross to enter the area, and organize the supply of food and medicine.
On August 15, Ukraine established its first military commandant’s office in the Kursk region.
