Kyiv believes that India should play a more active role in ending Russia’s war against Ukraine. In particular, it concerns peace talks, Hromadske reports.
This was stated by Ukraine’s Ambassador to India Oleksandr Polishchuk, Bloomberg quoted him as saying.
Thus, Ukraine wants New Delhi to “moderate” negotiations with Russia and use its connections to persuade Moscow to join the peace talks. This, according to the diplomat, is important for India if it wants to get a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
According to Polishchuk, Ukraine has offered India to hold a peace summit by November 2024, but it is not yet clear whether New Delhi will agree.
The ambassador also believes that India should not be satisfied with playing the role of a “postman who delivers messages between Ukraine and Russia”, but instead should play a more “reliable role”.
As a reminder, the Indian Prime Minister arrived in Kyiv in August. A few weeks before that visit, he was in Russia. Before going to Ukraine, Narendra Modi said he intended to discuss the war.
And during his meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Modi said that he wanted to play a role in the peaceful settlement of the Russian-Ukrainian war “as a friend”. Prior to that, the Indian Prime Minister told Russian President Vladimir Putin that “amidst guns and bombs, peace talks cannot be successful” and emphasized that “the heart bleeds” when children die.
Modi also discussed his visit to Ukraine with Putin. According to the Indian politician, he and Putin exchanged views on the Russian-Ukrainian war.
In June, India sent a representative to the Peace Summit organized by Ukraine in Switzerland, but did not sign a communiqué supporting the three points of the “peace formula”.
