Two key advisers to former US President Donald Trump have presented a plan according to which, if re-elected, he will provide Ukraine with additional military assistance only if Ukraine agrees to negotiate with Russia.
This was reported by Reuters, according to Hromadske.
According to one of Trump’s advisors, retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg, the United States will warn Moscow that any refusal to negotiate will lead to increased support for Ukraine.
According to Kellogg, bringing Russia and Ukraine to the negotiating table is very important.
We are telling the Ukrainians: “You have to come to the negotiating table, and if you don’t come to the negotiating table, the support of the United States will dry up.” And you say to Putin: “He has to come to the table, and if you don’t come to the table, we will give the Ukrainians everything they need to kill you in the field, – he said.
Fred Fleitz, another Trump adviser who worked on the plan, said that Ukraine should not formally cede its territory. However, according to him, Ukraine is unlikely to be able to regain effective control over its entire territory in the near future.
The plan of the former US president’s advisers also suggests that Moscow be forced to negotiate by promising Ukraine’s membership in NATO, which has been postponed for a long period of time.
According to Reuters, adviser Fleitz said that Trump was presented with this strategy, and he reacted positively to it. However, the adviser emphasized that this does not mean that Trump “agreed with every word” of the plan.
At the same time, Trump’s spokesman, Steven Cheung, said that only statements by Trump or authorized members of his campaign should be considered official.
