U.S. President Donald Trump publicly urged Hungarian citizens to support incumbent Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in the parliamentary elections. They are scheduled for April 12, 2026.

Donald Trump reported this on his social media platform Truth Social.
Details
In his statement, Trump called Orbán a “true friend,” a “strong leader,” and a “winner.” He also expressed full support for his re-election.
According to the U.S. president, Orbán develops the country’s economy:
“Viktor works hard to protect Hungary, grow the economy, create jobs, promote trade, stop illegal immigration, and maintain law and order.”
The head of the White House said relations between the United States and Hungary have reached a new level, largely thanks to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. He also noted that he supported Orbán in the 2022 elections and considers it an honor to do so again.
Context
International organizations have repeatedly criticized the Hungarian government. In particular, Reporters Without Borders and Freedom House note restrictions on freedom of speech, pressure on independent media, and harassment of journalists.
The European Parliament has also pointed to problems with the rule of law, judicial independence, and academic freedoms in the country.
In addition, Viktor Orbán pursues openly anti-Ukrainian policies. In particular, he has said that Brussels and Kyiv have effectively “declared war” on Budapest. Hungary also blocks the allocation of a €90 billion EU loan to Ukraine.
Previously The Ukrainian Review reported that the European Commission reduces public pressure on Prime Minister Viktor Orbán ahead of Hungary’s parliamentary elections in April 2026.
