The next Peace Summit is likely to be held in the Middle East – Yermak

02.08.2024

The second global peace summit will be held in a country from the so-called Global South, most likely in the Middle East, Suspilne reports.

This was stated by the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak to Bloomberg.

Ukraine held its first global peace summit in Switzerland, which ended with the signing of the peace summit communiqué by more than 90 countries and international organizations.

Among other things, the communiqué called on Russia to return the occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant to full control of Ukraine. In addition, the communiqué stated that Russia should ensure uninterrupted production and supply of food in Ukraine, provide full access to the seaports of the Black and Azov Seas, release all prisoners of war and return all deported Ukrainian children.

Although no specific location for the next peace summit is known, Yermak’s comments mark the first time that Ukraine has publicly indicated where it hopes to hold the next peace summit.

There is currently no timetable for the next summit, but Zelenskyy has stated that the country plans to convene a second peace summit before the November 2024 US presidential election.

Although it is known that Russia did not receive an invitation to the first global peace summit in June, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia should be present at the second peace summit in November to end the war.

During an interview with Bloomberg, Yermak echoed Zelenskyy’s sentiments, saying that “the most important expectation from the second summit is the formation of the main preconditions for the cessation of hostilities”.

We need to end this war as soon as possible to get a just peace, – Yermak added.

Earlier, Russia said it would not participate in the second peace summit.
