The adoption by the Georgian parliament of the law “On Transparency of Foreign Influence,” the so-called “foreign agents” law, has effectively stopped Georgia’s attempts to join the bloc.

This is stated in the results of the EU summit, Suspilne reports.

EU leaders noted that this law is a deviation from the steps outlined in the Commission’s recommendation for candidate status.

The European Council calls on the Georgian authorities to clarify their intentions by changing the current course of action, which jeopardizes Georgia’s path to the EU and de facto stops the accession process, — the document says.

Brussels called for an end to intimidation, threats and physical attacks on civil society representatives, political leaders, civic activists and journalists in Georgia.

The European Council also recalled that respect for the values and principles on which the European Union is based is important for any country seeking to become a member.

The Georgian authorities were urged to ensure that the parliamentary elections this fall are free and fair. The European Council also encourages partners to provide substantial long-term and short-term election observation.

The European Council reaffirms its unwavering support for the territorial integrity of Georgia and its solidarity with the Georgian people and its readiness to continue to support Georgians on their path to a European future, — the document says.

On June 24, European Union High Representative Josep Borrell said that the Foreign Affairs Council would discuss the situation with Georgia over the law “On Transparency of Foreign Influence”.

In the future, they may cut off financial support, certain political contacts, and even cancel Georgia’s European integration.
