On Monday, July 15, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas and the entire Estonian government resigned. The official will act as prime minister until a new government is formed, Suspilne reports.
This was reported by the Estonian public broadcaster Eesti Rahvusringhääling (ERR).
At 8:30 am on Monday morning, the government headed by Kaja Kallas convened for an extraordinary meeting, at which the prime minister and the entire cabinet resigned. Kallas then took her resignation letter to President Alar Karis in Kadriorg.
The Estonian prime minister will continue to act as head of the government until a new head is approved. She expressed hope that a new government would be formed soon.
Kaja Kallas has been in office since January 2021. She noted that it was a very difficult time. She started her work during the coronavirus crisis.
I am probably the only prime minister who immediately after taking the oath of office went to a government meeting where decisions had to be made immediately, – Kallas said.
Kallas is pleased that, despite the crisis, her government has been able to make progress in Estonia and make decisions that were not made before, such as the transition to Estonian-language education.
Why are there changes in the Estonian government?
Earlier, the European Council agreed on candidates for appointment to senior positions in the EU for the next five years. The candidacy of Estonian Prime Minister Kai Kallas was proposed for the post of High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
At the end of June, the leadership of the Estonian Reform Party nominated Kristen Michal as a candidate for the post of Prime Minister of Estonia instead of Kai Kallas. He is the Minister of Climate in Kallas’ government. Michal emphasized the party’s trust and promised to take responsibility with dignity. The party leadership also agreed on the composition of the delegation for coalition talks.
At the same time, the new chairman of the Reform Party is to be elected at the congress of political forces on September 8.
