Security and Energy Cooperation: Zelenskyy Meets Erdoğan

The presidents of Ukraine and Turkey discussed efforts to secure a reliable peace for Ukraine, as well as energy cooperation and the situation in the Middle East. Ukraine continues to offer its experience to its partners.

On April 4, Volodymyr Zelenskyy held talks with the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The meeting took place at the Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul. The Ukrainian president thanked Turkey for its support since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale aggression. He also highlighted Turkey’s role in facilitating the return of Ukrainian prisoners.

During the meeting, the presidents discussed the situation in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf region. Zelenskyy shared the outcomes of his visits to countries in the region and informed Erdoğan about agreements reached, as well as the experience Ukraine can offer to Turkey and its allies.

Erdoğan assured that Turkey is ready to contribute to achieving a reliable peace for Ukraine and reaffirmed support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also stated that Turkey is prepared to host the next round of negotiations between Ukraine and Russia with U.S. mediation.

Key Issues Discussed

Among the topics discussed was the deepening of security cooperation, including the implementation of joint projects in the defense-industrial sector.

“There is firm political readiness to work together, and our teams will finalize the details in the coming days,” Zelenskyy commented on the results of the meeting.

The presidents agreed on new steps in security cooperation. Zelenskyy also shared details of contacts with the United States. They further discussed removing barriers to the development of bilateral trade.

Particular attention was given to energy cooperation. The leaders discussed joint projects to develop gas infrastructure, including practical steps for implementation. They also raised the possibility of jointly developing gas fields.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan agreed that on April 5, a meeting would take place between Naftogaz CEO Serhii Koretskyi and Turkey’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar.

Earlier, The Ukrainian Review reported that the United States had not indicated any plans to stop supplying weapons to Ukraine, although the Ukrainian president suggested such a possibility could arise later.
