16.07.2024

Roberta Metsola has been re-elected President of the European Parliament. She will hold the post for another two and a half years, Babel writes.

This was reported  in the European Parliament on Tuesday, July 16.

The President of the European Parliament has a wide range of executive and representative powers, which extend to all the powers necessary to preside over the work of the Parliament.

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, congratulated Roberta Metsola on her re-election.

It is well deserved. Your leadership and passion for Europe are needed more than ever, – she wrote.

Roberta Metsola first took office in January 2022. She is a Maltese politician, a member of the Nationalist Party of Malta and the European People’s Party. She received 562 votes out of 720 members of the European Parliament.

The traditional five-year mandate of the president of the parliament is divided into two parts, between the center-left Socialists and Democrats and the center-right European People’s Party. After Metsola, someone from the center-left will take her place.

Roberta Metsola has once again become one of the four key figures who will lead the EU in the coming years, along with the head of the European Commission, the president of the European Council, and the EU’s chief diplomat.

The European Parliament elections traditionally took place over four days. They began on June 6 in the Netherlands. In most EU member states, including Germany, voting took place on Sunday, June 9.
