Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has announced that he will resign in September and will not seek re-election as leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Babel writes.
This was reported by Kyodo.
Politics cannot function without public trust. I will now focus on supporting the newly elected leader of the LDP, – the prime minister said.
Japanese support for Kishida has declined amid revelations of his party’s ties to the controversial Unification Church and political donations from it made at party fundraisers that went unreported.
In addition, Fumio Kishida has also faced public discontent because his salary has not kept pace with the rising cost of living.
The politician who succeeds Kishida as chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party will have to unite the divided party, deal with rising costs of living, escalating geopolitical tensions with China, and the potential return of Donald Trump to the U.S. White House.
Fumio Kishida became prime minister on October 4, 2021.
