Patriot system from Romania arrives in Ukraine

03.10.2024

The Patriot missile defense system provided by NATO member Romania has arrived in Ukraine. This was recognized by representatives of both countries, Radio Svoboda reports.

I thank every country that helps us with air defense. Special thanks to Romania for the Patriot system. Together, we can achieve even greater effectiveness – we can put an end to Russian terror by jointly destroying shaheds and missiles, –  President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote in the evening of October 2.

Also, the Romanian Ministry of Defense confirmed the delivery of the Patriot system to Ukraine in a comment to Radio Svoboda.

Underscoring the risks to NATO members like Romania that border Ukraine, Russian drones again struck the Ukrainian port of Izmail, prompting Bucharest to deploy F-16 fighter jets to monitor the situation on the evening of October 2.

We confirm that the Patriot system has arrived in Ukraine, –  Romanian Defense Ministry spokesman Constantin Spînu said on October 3, after the government in Bucharest decided last month to transfer the system to Kyiv.

According to the document, Romania grants Ukraine the right to use the system free of charge.
