Orban’s defeat as a blow to MAGA and Trump

Bloomberg columnist Lionel Laurent argues that Orban’s defeat carries significance far beyond Hungary. He says the Hungarian prime minister long served as a symbol of so-called “illiberal democracy” and as a model for right-wing political forces worldwide, including the MAGA movement linked to Donald Trump.

Orban built close ties with American conservatives and with Trump himself. Under his leadership, Hungary promoted an alternative governance model focused on national sovereignty and control over institutions.

The analyst believes the election result challenges the idea that such political models will inevitably strengthen over time. Instead, it shows that voters can change even deeply entrenched systems through democratic means.

An opposition victory led by Péter Magyar could signal a policy shift toward closer cooperation with the European Union and a revision of the previous government’s course.

Vance explains support for Orban

US Vice President J.D. Vance confirmed that Washington deliberately supported Orban despite recognizing the risk of his defeat.

“We, of course, knew there was a very high chance that Viktor would lose this election. We did it because he is one of the few European leaders we saw willing to stand up to the Brussels bureaucracy, which has been very, very harmful to the United States.”

Vance also called Orban “a good man” and said his political legacy is “transformational.”

He also commented on his visit to Budapest before the election:

“We went because it was the right thing to do – to support someone who had supported us for a very long time… This was about the United States and the fact that he had been a good partner.”

At the same time, the vice president said the United States stands ready to work with Hungary’s new government.

Context

Viktor Orban led Hungary for more than a decade and became one of the most prominent representatives of right-wing populism in Europe. His policies often drew criticism from the European Union over limits on institutional independence and a hardline migration stance.

Hungary’s 2026 parliamentary elections ended with an opposition victory, after which Orban conceded defeat. The result marked one of the most significant political shifts in Europe in recent years and could influence the balance of power in both the EU and transatlantic politics.

Earlier, The Ukrainian Review reported that Tisza party leader Péter Magyar called for a change in Hungary’s policy toward Ukraine.
