NYT: In secret part of victory plan, Zelenskyy asked for Tomahawk missiles

The secret part of the victory plan that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented to his Western partners included a clause on providing Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles.

The New York Times writes about this, citing sources, Babel reports.

Privately, U.S. officials have expressed some indignation at Zelenskyy’s victory plan, calling it unrealistic and almost entirely dependent on Western aid.

In particular, according to media sources, Zelenskyy proposed a “non-nuclear deterrence package” under which Ukraine would receive Tomahawk missiles. The NYT’s interlocutors believe that this is a completely unrealistic demand.

It is worth noting that the range of the Tomahawk is 1,500 miles (ca. 2,414 km), which is more than seven times the range of the ATACMS missiles that Ukraine received this year. And the United States has sent only a limited number of these systems, senior U.S. officials said.

Media interlocutors say that Ukraine has also not provided Washington with convincing arguments about how it will use long-range weapons. The list of targets inside Russia far exceeds the number of missiles that the United States or any other ally could deliver without jeopardizing missiles designed to address potential problems in the Middle East and Asia, the sources added.

The New York Times sources also said that Zelenskyy was stunned that President Biden did not give him permission to use U.S. long-range missiles to strike deep into Russia when they met in Washington in September. In the past, Biden has typically relented after initially denying Ukraine weapons, including Abrams tanks, F-16 fighter jets, and ATACMS air defense systems.
