Meanwhile, in just the first three days of escalation in the Middle East, regional countries fired more than 800 PAC-3 missiles to intercept Iranian rockets and drones. In just a few days, they expended more of these interceptors than Ukraine has received throughout the entire war.

The NYT article also notes that Ukraine seeks to reduce the use of costly Patriot missiles against drones. Each missile can cost over $3 million.

Instead, Ukraine actively uses cheaper methods to destroy drones: machine guns, electronic warfare systems, fighter-launched missiles, and Ukrainian interceptor drones.

Context

PAC-3 missiles for Patriot systems intercept ballistic and cruise missiles, including hypersonic targets such as Kinzhal missiles and Iskander missiles.

Ukraine has repeatedly reported shortages of these missiles and proposed exchanges to partners: supplying its own interceptor drones to counter Iranian Shahed drones in exchange for Patriot missiles needed to defend against Russian ballistic strikes.

Recently Ukraine received requests for help from leaders of several Gulf countries, including Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.

Earlier, The Ukrainian Review previously reported that Ukraine sent a team of drone experts and interceptor drones to the Middle East to help protect U.S. military bases in Jordan from Iranian drone attacks.
