Massive government reset: five Ukrainian ministers tender their resignations

September 3, 2024, was a landmark day for the Ukrainian government, as five ministers tendered their resignations at once. 

Among them:

   — Denis Malyuska – Minister of Justice of Ukraine;

   — Oleksandr Kamyshin – Minister of Strategic Industries of Ukraine;

   — Ruslan Strilets – Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine;

   — Olha Stefanishyna – Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine;

   —Iryna Vereshchuk – Vice Prime Minister – Minister for Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine.

On September 4, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba also submitted his resignation.

Decisions of the Verkhovna Rada committees:

According to member of parliament Yaroslav Zheleznyak, the Committees promptly reviewed the submitted applications and provided their recommendations:

   — The Economic Committee recommended dismissing Vitaliy Koval from the post of the Head of the State Property Fund of Ukraine and Oleksandr Kamyshin from the post of the Minister of Strategic Industries.

   — The Committee on Ecology supported the resignation of Ruslan Strilets as Minister of Environmental Protection.

   — The Committee on Legal Policy considered the resignation of Denis Malyuska.

   — The Committee on European Integration decided to temporarily dismiss  Olha Stefanishyna.

But at today’s meeting, the Rada agreed to dismiss four ministers:

  • Oleksandr Kamyshin from the post of Minister for Strategic Industries of Ukraine;
  • Olha Stefanishyna from the post of Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine;
  • Ruslan Strilets as Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine;
  • Denis Malyuska as Minister of Justice.

However, MPs did not have enough votes to dismiss Iryna Vereshchuk from the post of Deputy Prime Minister – Minister for Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories and Head of the State Property Fund of Ukraine, Vitaliy Koval.

In addition, the Rada did not consider the dismissal of Dmytro Kuleba, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

In his address on September 3, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced large-scale changes in the government, emphasizing that state institutions must be strengthened to achieve important results. 

Zelenskyy also emphasized the importance of increasing the level of interaction between the central government and communities, as well as strengthening work with NATO and preparing for negotiations on Ukraine’s membership in the European Union.
