The Ministry of Defense of Latvia is handing over another batch of combat drones to the Armed Forces of Ukraine as part of the drone coalition – 2500 units.
This is stated in a press release from the Latvian ministry, Suspilne reports.
The cost of these 2500 drones is 4 million euros. The UAVs will be delivered in stages. It is known that the first batch of 300 drones will be delivered in the coming days.
Defense Minister Andris Sprūds also said that Latvia is investing heavily in the further development and implementation of unmanned technologies.
Latvia plans to continue purchasing domestically produced combat drones for Ukraine by the end of the year. First of all, we are talking about FPV.
What is known about the drone coalition for Ukraine?
On December 12, 2023, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov met for the first time in Kyiv with his Latvian counterpart Andris Sprūds. They discussed the creation of a “drone coalition”. It was then that the decision was made to form a coalition of drones and electronic warfare.
In mid-January 2024, Latvian Defense Minister Andris Sprūds said that the country had made progress in creating a coalition of nearly 20 states to arm the Ukrainian military with “thousands” of new drones.
Currently, according to the Latvian Defense Ministry, the coalition includes 14 countries: Latvia, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, and the United States. In total, the participating countries have allocated more than half a billion euros for drones for the Armed Forces.
