Kostin: Ukraine urges Brazil to arrest Putin at G20 summit

15.10.2024

Ukraine has received information that Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin may attend the G20 summit in Brazil next month. Therefore, Ukraine calls on the Brazilian authorities to execute the warrant for his arrest, Suspilne reports.

This was announced by Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin in an interview with Reuters.

The Prosecutor General called on Brazil to execute the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrant for the Russian leader, emphasizing the importance of uniting the international community to bring Putin to justice.

Given the information about Putin’s possible visit to Brazil for the G20 summit, I want to emphasize once again that the Brazilian authorities, as parties to the Rome Statute, are obliged to arrest him, – Andriy Kostin said.

The Prosecutor General of Ukraine expressed hope that Putin’s arrest would confirm Brazil’s status as a democratic state that adheres to the rule of law. Failure to fulfill this obligation will set a dangerous precedent, allowing leaders accused of crimes to move freely around the world, the prosecutor general added.

According to Reuters, Brazil has sent Putin a standard invitation to the G20 meetings in Rio de Janeiro on November 18-19, but has received no indication that he plans to attend, two Brazilian officials said.

At the same time, the International Criminal Court’s prosecutor’s office refused to comment on the situation, but ICC spokesman Fadi El Abdallah reminded that participating states are obliged to comply with court decisions, including arrest warrants.

On October 14, Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Putin had not yet made a decision on whether to attend the G20 summit.

When the decision is made, we will inform you, – he told reporters.

It is worth recalling that in early September, Putin paid an official visit to Mongolia. The country recognizes the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court but has not arrested him.
