The death of the President of Iran

On the afternoon of May 19, Iranian state media reported that a helicopter carrying President Ebrahim Raisi had probably crashed near the Azerbaijani city of Julfa. The Iranian leader was returning from Azerbaijan, where he had met with President Ilham Aliyev.

On the morning of May 20, it became known that the Iranian president and all other passengers on board the helicopter had died. Reuters quoted an Iranian official as saying that the helicopter had completely burned down in the crash.

According to the Iranian Constitution, in the event of the death of the president, his successor must be elected within 50 days in a national election. For the first time in Iran’s history, a woman, Zohreh Elahian, was among the candidates who registered to run in the upcoming presidential race.
