Giorgia Meloni seeks to ease tensions between the US and the EU over Greenland

18.01.2026

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is seeking to reduce tensions between the United States and the European Union amid a dispute over Greenland that has led to trade threats from Washington. According to her, the escalation may have resulted from misunderstandings and a breakdown in communication between the sides.

Meloni made the remarks during a press briefing in Seoul, saying she had discussed the situation by phone with US President Donald Trump, with whom she maintains direct contact.

According to her account, the US president’s irritation and subsequent tariff threats may have been triggered by European military activity in Greenland, which Washington perceived as anti-American. At the same time, Meloni stressed that NATO’s actions are not directed against the United States, but rather against potential threats posed by Russia and China.

NATO consultations and the EU’s response

The Italian prime minister also said she had already discussed the situation with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and intends to hold consultations with EU partners to avoid further escalation. She made it clear that she considers Trump’s anti-European statements and threats to impose tariffs on eight EU countries to be a mistake.

Against this backdrop, Brussels is holding crisis talks on a possible EU response to US tariffs that Washington may introduce from February 1. Germany and several other countries have already warned that tariff threats undermine transatlantic relations and carry the risk of further escalation.

Conclusion

Thus, the situation around Greenland has become another test for transatlantic relations. Further developments will depend on whether the United States and the European Union can ease tensions through diplomatic consultations and avoid a trade escalation.
