In the coming weeks and months, Germany will hand over the third Patriot air defense system to Ukraine, as well as IRIS-T systems, Gepard self-propelled artillery systems, missiles and ammunition.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said this at the opening ceremony of the Ukraine Recovery Conference 2024 in Berlin, Babel reports.
Olaf Scholz appealed to the international community to support the German initiative to increase the capacity of the Ukrainian air defense system “with everything you can”. According to him, the best reconstruction is “the one that should not be realized.”
He added that he would advocate for “far-reaching and long-term commitments for Ukraine” at the upcoming G7 leaders’ summit in Italy on June 13-15.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine currently needs at least 7 additional Patriot systems to “close our main urban agglomerations in the near future. And this will be the driver for preserving normal life in Ukraine”.
Germany is one of the European leaders in military assistance to Ukraine. They have provided the Ukrainian army with Leopard 1 and Leopard 2 tanks of various modifications, IRIS-T and Patriot air defense systems, MARS II MLRS, Marder armored personnel carriers and Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns, a large number of armored vehicles and vehicles, and much more.
Ukraine expects three M142 HIMARS mobile missile systems, six Sea King Mk41 helicopters and a Patriot air defense system in the next packages from Germany.
