Finnish President Alexander Stubb suggests a deal with Donald Trump to provide military aid in the Strait of Hormuz for continued backing of Kyiv. This proposal aims to address the Persian Gulf oil crisis while securing a favorable peace settlement for Ukraine.

Politico reported that European leaders see real potential in offering the US military support to secure the Strait of Hormuz. In return, Europe expects Donald Trump to provide Ukraine with all the necessary resources to reach an acceptable peace agreement with Russia. Stubb emphasized that such a deal could align the strategic interests of both Washington and Brussels.
Impact of the Middle East conflict
The ongoing war with Iran negatively affects Ukraine as rising oil prices bolster the Russian economy. Furthermore, the conflict diverts American attention and resources away from Europe. Stubb warned that a prolonged confrontation in the Middle East might pressure Ukraine into accepting unfavorable territorial concessions to Vladimir Putin.
“I have no illusions about who can convince Trump of anything. If I can convince him of even one idea out of ten regarding Ukraine, I think that’s good,” the Finnish President commented.
He also suggested that if negotiations fail, Europe will face a difficult situation without American assistance. This would force European nations to increase their own intelligence sharing and weapon deliveries to sustain the defense against a full-scale invasion.
“I hope that the peace talks on Ukraine do not fail, as happened with the talks between Iran and the US. But time will tell,” Stubb concluded.
Delayed peace negotiations
The Middle Eastern crisis significantly slows down the diplomatic process for ending the war in Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently noted that the US focus remains fixed on the Middle East, causing constant delays in peace talks.
Previously, The Ukrainian Review reported that Donald Trump is losing interest in a Ukraine peace settlement as his focus shifts toward the Iranian conflict.
