EU develops strategy to support Ukraine in case of Trump’s re-election

The European Commission has set up a special group to develop a strategy in case Washington changes its position on supporting Ukraine if Donald Trump wins the election, Slovoidilo reports.

According to the Financial Times, the European Commission has set up a special group to prepare for a possible return of Donald Trump to the White House, as well as to assess the impact of a possible Kamala Harris presidency.

The US election is far from over, so it’s about figuring out what the consequences might be in any case. Key officials are discussing what we need to focus on the most, – said one of the interlocutors.

The publication also notes that the group is also assessing the impact of a possible Kamala Harris presidency and preparing for policy changes after the US elections in November.

In particular, the EU is concerned that Trump could impose painful tariffs on EU exports, cut off support for Ukraine, and force Kyiv to agree to Moscow’s terms for ending the war. There are also concerns about Trump’s threats to withdraw the United States from NATO or to undermine mutual defense provisions for countries that he believes do not spend enough on defense.
