EU condemns Russian elections in occupied Crimea

09.09.2024

The European Union has condemned the illegal Russian elections in the annexed Crimea and called them another act of violation of international law, the UN Charter and the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

This is stated in a statement of the European External Action Service on September 9, Radiosvoboda reports.

The EU does not recognize these so-called “elections” or their results in Crimea. They are null and void and cannot have any legal effect. The Russian leadership and those responsible for organizing these illegal actions will be brought to justice, – the diplomatic mission said.

It refers to the UN General Assembly resolution of March 27, 2014, which reaffirms the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

The European Union reaffirms its unchanged position on Crimea: it is part of Ukraine, – the statement reads.

From September 6 to 8, Russian authorities held illegal elections in the annexed Crimea and Sevastopol to the Russian-constituted Legislative Assembly, the Russian-controlled Crimean parliament, and city and village councils.

There were no official international observers during these elections. The international community, the UN, the OSCE and other organizations do not recognize these elections, their results, or deputies.

The Russian authorities in Crimea stated that as of the morning of September 8, more than half a million people had voted in the illegal elections organized by the Russian Federation for the Russian parliament of Crimea, as well as city and village councils.
