Former U.S. President and presidential candidate Donald Trump said he would cut off financial aid to Ukraine.
He said this at the Turning Point USA campaign event in Detroit, Hromadske reports.
“I think Zelensky is probably the best salesman of any politician who has ever lived. Every time he comes to our country, he leaves with 60 billion dollars […] He just left 4 days ago with 60 billion, came home and announced that he needs another 60 billion. This will never end. I will solve it before I take the White House”, — Trump said.
Trump also said that he still sympathizes with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as he did not confirm Trump’s threats in 2019.
On July 25, 2019, Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a phone conversation. In it, the then-American president allegedly pressured Zelenskyy to have Ukraine investigate the actions of Joe Biden, Trump’s main rival in the 2020 presidential election.
In the United States, this was qualified as pressure on the leader of a foreign state to interfere in the election campaign, and therefore an unacceptable abuse of presidential power. This was the reason for Trump’s first impeachment.
“You know, he (Zelenskyy — ed.) was very kind about the fiction of the first impeachment, he said: “No, the president did not threaten me.” He could have defended his interests, so [he could have said]: “I was threatened.” So I like him. But he’s the best salesman of all time”, — Trump said.
Recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with U.S. President Joe Biden as part of his visits to third countries. In particular, Ukraine and the United States signed a 10-year security cooperation agreement.
