Ukraine must focus on decentralizing its energy sector to reduce vulnerability to attacks and ensure the resilience of its energy system. This was reported by The Ukrainian Review with reference to Dovydas Vitkauskas, an expert on energy and corporate governance.
The more electricity producers there are, the better. Decentralized electricity supply and distributed generation will also be safer and less vulnerable to Russian missile attacks, – Vitkauskas emphasized.
The expert believes that Ukraine’s political and financial decisions, along with international aid, should aim to support decentralized energy generation. This includes developing both “green” technologies (wind and solar power plants) and “gray” technologies (mobile gas cogeneration units).
Any material or financial ‘gifts’ to Ukraine’s energy system must benefit Ukrainian end-users, not private monopolists, – he added.
Decentralized energy is a crucial tool not only for addressing the immediate challenges of war, but also for ensuring the country’s long-term energy independence.
