During his address to Congress, Charles III said the same “steadfastness” that the United States and the United Kingdom showed during world wars and the Cold War is needed today to defend Ukraine.

“In the immediate aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks, when NATO invoked Article 5 for the first time and the UN Security Council stood united in the face of terror, we answered the call together, as our nations have done for over a century. Side by side through two world wars, the Cold War, Afghanistan, and moments that shaped our shared security. Today, that same unwavering resolve is needed to defend Ukraine and its bravest people,” he said.

During the visit, the king also met Trump outside the White House. The US president said he was “very jealous” of the British monarch’s speech and called it “wonderful.” The two posed for photos and continued talks afterward.

Separately, the White House posted a photo from the meeting on social media with the caption “Two kings,” sparking media reaction and broader debate about Trump’s political image.

Context

This marks only the second time a British monarch has addressed the US Congress. Elizabeth II delivered the first such speech in 1991. Charles III’s four-day visit coincides with the 250th anniversary of US independence and aims to highlight the strategic partnership between the two countries.

The visit takes place against a complex international backdrop, including the war in Ukraine, conflict in the Middle East, and domestic political tensions in the United States.

Earlier, The Ukrainian Review reported that President Donald Trump has shown decreasing interest in negotiations aimed at ending Russia’s war against Ukraine.
