British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday, May 22, announced the dissolution of the country’s parliament. Early elections to the parliament of the United Kingdom will be held on July 4 this year.

Rishi Sunak said this during an address to Downing Street, the BBC reports.

In his address, Rishi Sunak said he had asked King Charles III to dissolve parliament before the election in accordance with official procedure.

“Earlier today I spoke to His Majesty to ask for the dissolution of Parliament. The king granted this request, and general elections will be held on July 4”, — the prime minister said.

The Prime Minister stated that his government has a plan and is ready to act boldly. And he began his Downing Street speech by saying that over the past five years, the country has experienced the most difficult times since the Second World War, but has overcome these challenges.

Speaking in Downing Street in the pouring rain, a soaked Mr. Sunak vowed to “fight for every vote” as he pitched the election as a direct battle between him and Sir Keir Starmer.

According to the legislation, the elections were to be held no later than January 2025. The government discussed for a long time what date to appoint them.

Elections in Great Britain take place according to the majority system. The majority will be given to the party whose candidates win in more than 325 constituencies. Polls predict that Labor could win even more than 400 seats in the new composition of the House of Commons.
