Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said that his country cannot take sides in the war between Ukraine and Russia, and that those involved in the conflict who are now demanding a dialogue with Brazil should have done so before the war began, Suspilne informs.
This was reported by Correio Braziliense.
Therefore, it is important for Brazil not to participate in the war between Ukraine and Russia. Therefore, it is important for Brazil to say that we want peace, we do not want war. Those who want to talk to us now could have done so before the war started, – Lula said.
The speech came after the Ukrainian authorities suggested that Lula visit Ukraine, and against the backdrop of criticism from Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Brazil’s position, which he considers pro-Russian. On the other hand, Russian President Vladimir Putin has named Brazil, along with China and India, as possible mediators in achieving peace.
It is noted that the Brazilian government supports a peaceful resolution of the conflict and has already condemned the Russian invasion.
Brazilian-Chinese proposal to end the war
As a reminder, on May 23, 2024, the governments of Brazil and China issued a joint statement on resolving the war between Russia and Ukraine, advocating political negotiations to achieve peace and calling for a conference on this issue.
On August 2, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced that the Sino-Brazilian “six-point consensus” on ending the war in Ukraine had received “positive” responses from more than 110 countries.
