Biden to announce new $225 million arms package for Ukraine soon

07.06.2024

U.S. President Joe Biden plans to announce a new $225 million military aid package for Ukraine during a meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Paris on June 7, Friday.

Reuters and the Associated Press report this, citing sources, Hromadske informs.

It is known that the new aid will include, in particular, ammunition for HIMARS systems, which the Ukrainian military can use to strike at Russian territory. The package will also include mortar systems and artillery shells.

According to AP sources, the package will include missiles for HAWK air defense systems, Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, Javelin and AT-4 anti-tank systems, 155-mm howitzers, armored vehicles, trailers, patrol boats, explosive materials and a wide range of spare parts.

The weapons will be provided to Ukraine from existing U.S. stockpiles so that they can quickly reach the front.

The talks between Biden and Zelenskyy in Paris will be the first since the Ukrainian president visited Washington in December 2023. The leaders will meet again next week at the G7 summit in Italy, where countries will discuss using Russian frozen assets to provide $50 billion to Ukraine.

The United States is trying to catch up with Ukraine’s arms needs, Deputy National Security Advisor John Feiner said recently. According to him, Ukraine needs artillery ammunition and air defense equipment the most.

During a speech on June 6 in Normandy on the 80th anniversary of D-Day, Biden promised that the United States would “not back down” from defending Ukraine and would not allow Russia to threaten Europe even more.
