After the arrival of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, the US position on strikes deep into Russian territory with American weapons remains unchanged – Kyiv is allowed to strike only at the border areas of Russia, Hromadske reports.
This was stated by US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller during his briefing on August 5.
We continue to look at the needs of the Ukrainian military, assess the security situation and try to respond to their needs. This is a process that has been going on from the very beginning to the present day, – the spokesman said.
The official also added that the White House may reconsider this decision depending on the situation on the battlefield.
In late May, Politico reported that US President Joe Biden had secretly authorized Ukraine to strike Russia with weapons provided by Washington. Subsequently, Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s press service confirmed that this permission had been granted, but with certain restrictions.
Later, the US National Security Council explained that the authorization to use US weapons in Russia is not limited to the defense of the Kharkiv region. According to National Security Council spokesman Michael Carpenter, the authorization applies to the border area from where Russia is preparing its attacks on Ukraine.
U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken noted that the United States will continue to “adapt and adjust” as needed.
In addition to the United States, Ukraine has already received authorizations to use the transferred weapons at its own discretion from a number of partners, although not all of them.
